High Sheriff of Shropshire 2013-2014

I am honoured to serve as High Sheriff of Shropshire having received the Warrant of Appointment from the Privy Council and duly made my Declaration in the presence of The Honourable Mr Justice Richards at the High Sheriff’s Installation Ceremony held in Shrewsbury Castle on 5 April 2013. 

The High Sheriff is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to represent Her in the County of Shropshire in matters relating to law and order.  I look forward to being involved with and offering support to the Police, Judges, Magistrates, Coroners, the Prison and Probation Services, the emergency services and all branches of the Armed Forces.

My year in office will give me the opportunity to highlight and support the work of the very many volunteers who make such a difference to the lives of people living and working in Shropshire.  Volunteers work in all walks of life, from schools, hospitals, hospices, youth clubs, institutions for the young and the elderly – to mention just a few. I hope to support in particular those working with young people. In these difficult times where paid work does not necessarily follow formal education, support is needed in many different ways.    

Shropshire is the largest inland county in England, with a wealth of beautiful countryside as well as many historic towns and villages.  The diverse cultural heritage is reflected in the county’s museums.  It is my wish to support the museums, to highlight their work for the benefit of Shropshire people and their heritage. Especially at this time of financial hardship and uncertainty, solace is sought in appreciating our cultural heritage.

Commenting on her appointment, Diana Flint said “I am honoured to be able to serve as High Sheriff of Shropshire, following in the steps of so many sheriffs before me, stretching back over 1000 years. I am the sixth Lady High Sheriff of Shropshire, since Lady Forester was appointed our first lady Sheriff in 1997. There are records of 2 previous ladies who served in other shires in the Middle Ages!   The role is clearly steeped in history and has evolved over the centuries, yet today it remains an important part of the fabric of our nation and each High Sheriff has an opportunity to “make a difference”.  I am greatly looking forward to serving my county and am grateful for the support of the Under Sheriff as well as those who have served ahead of me”.
