Veronica and I attended a day at RAF Shawbury together with the Mayors of Shrewsbury and Telford & Wrekin to view the first-class training delivered there. We were welcomed by Group Captain Norris and his senior officers, and briefed on the activities of the station. We were then given an excellent guided tour of the base and its facilities, including the new Juno and Jupiter helicopters, and were allowed to try out the Griffin helicopter simulator. (I crashed almost immediately but Veronica did irritatingly well!) We then visited the air traffic control simulators and the very realistic tower control room simulator. It was an extremely enjoyable and well constructed tour, demonstrating clearly Shawbury’s determination to remain at the cutting edge of the training of helicopter pilots and air traffic controllers.
