I attended the Rifles’ Regimental Awards Dinner in the splendour of the Great Hall, Guildhall, City of London, at which awards for various types of excellence were given out to serving members of the Rifles by HRH Prince Henry of Wales. The programme for the evening was very impressive with excellent food and drink and rousing military music. The Colonel Commandant, General Sir Nicholas Carter, gave a thoughtful speech about the regiment’s recent activity. I met a number of soldiers from Shropshire serving in No 2 Rifles – one of whose parents live in the same village as us, namely Whittington, near Oswestry – and had the pleasure of talking at length to Lt Col Nick Jenkins, Chairman of the Trustees of the Shropshire Regimental Museum at the Castle in Shrewsbury.
